Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Cftc)

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is a separate government organization that regulates the derivatives markets. The CFTC was established in 1974 as an independent agency with the mandate to oversee the commodity futures and options markets in the United States.

The CFTC's mission is to protect market participants from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices, and to foster open, competitive, and financially sound futures and options markets. The Commission strives to accomplish these objectives by:

• Regulating futures and option markets
• Enforcing the rules of these markets
• Investigating and prosecuting violators of the rules
• Educating the public about the markets

The CFTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Chicago, Kansas City, New York, and Tampa.
